Do Thinking Machines Deserve Human Rights?

leave a comment »

It seems it first stems from the cuteness factor.  We don’t like to see cute thinks get hurt.  Then it goes a step further and makes us question how we treat all machines.  At what point does a doll go from toy to something which we respect?

If I told you that there are people out there who set cute fuzzy animals on fire and laughed about it, I would certainly hope it would revolt and anger you.  What if I told you that instead of animals it was an animontronic toy?

The perennial concern about the rise of robots has been how to keep them from, well, killing us. Isaac Asimov came down from the mountaintop with his Three Laws of Robotics (to summarize: Robots shouldn’t disobey or hurt humans or themselves). But what are the rules for the humans in this relationship?

Now of course this blog’s main concern is being aware that the robots can rise up and kill us at any time.  Though one of the reasons robots may do this, just like the gladiators of Rome, is due to mistreatment by human beings.

Sacrifice Robots, Not Humans

leave a comment »

A letter to the editor on Canada’s The Star website addresses the death of Canadian soldiers from roadside explosive traps and puts for the premise that robots should be leading the charge, setting off the Improvised Explosive Devices so humans won’t be killed by them.

When it comes to the use of robots in combat, I do think it is accepted that using robots in this manner is good and proper.  Robots are already performing the task of dismantling and setting off road side explosives in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The real question is how we can make them more effective.

Robots on Parade for Thanksgiving

leave a comment »

I wanted to post a heart warming Thanksgiving based robot story and found one.  It’s a Thanksgiving Miracle!

Okay, I don’t think it is all that heart warming but it is a Thanksgiving robot story.  Lawrence Technological University puts on an annual parade of robots around Thanksgiving (this year it was on the 22nd of November).  The robots built by middle and high school students need to be fully autonomous, able to follow the parade route, and be able to detect the other robots so there are no collisions.

At the RoboParade website, there is a video of past Thanksgiving parades. Might be more entertaining than the Macy parade.
