Robots on Parade for Thanksgiving

leave a comment »

I wanted to post a heart warming Thanksgiving based robot story and found one.  It’s a Thanksgiving Miracle!

Okay, I don’t think it is all that heart warming but it is a Thanksgiving robot story.  Lawrence Technological University puts on an annual parade of robots around Thanksgiving (this year it was on the 22nd of November).  The robots built by middle and high school students need to be fully autonomous, able to follow the parade route, and be able to detect the other robots so there are no collisions.

At the RoboParade website, there is a video of past Thanksgiving parades. Might be more entertaining than the Macy parade.

Robots Can Know When You are Feeling Blue

Dr. Lola Canamero is part a team of scientists in the United Kingdom working on making robots emotionally responsive to humans.  A robot that can interpret humans emotional state of being can then react and alter behavior in appropriate ways making them better companions, caregivers and servants.

Robot Preferences – Machine vs. Anthropomorphic

leave a comment »

A fascinating discussion on what type of robot people prefer.  In Japan the preference is for more humanoid like robots while in the U.S. we have a preference for more machinelike robots.  The difference was compared to R2-D2 and C-3PO.  We all know R2 was far cuter, more personable, and less annoying, while C-3PO was only tolerable because of his charming pal.  So in my opinion the style of the robot doesn’t matter, so long as it is cute and whimsical.
