Intelligent robots for saving lives –

leave a comment » News – Intelligent robots for saving lives.  Tekniker-IK4 is developing two robots capable of operating autonomously that can be used to explore dangerous situations.

…the ROBAUCO project has developed mobile, autonomous and cooperating robots that can undertake more complex tasks. In fact, it has already designed two prototypes that have undergone trials aimed at finding solutions for various emergency situations. In order to suitably programme the functions of these prototypes, the project has had the help and advice of the Office for Attention to Emergencies of the Basque Government and SOS Deiak and other emergency services.

Why should the military have all the fun?  Now you,  the creepy guy who works in the cubicle down from you, the stalker ex-girlfriend, and me can have access to robo-spies.  Specifically Spyball from Wowwee, the company that has given us Robosapiens.

The Spyball is a small ball with a built in webcam.  The ball can be remotely controlled wirelessly from a computer or phone. 1/7/2008 Wowwee Rolls Out Spyball

Jollbot Hops and Rolls

leave a comment »

It looks like a spherical wire cage, but it is a robot that can roll in any direction.  Rolling robots aren’t that unique, but this one has an additional ability to hop.  It appears to wind down the cage, creating tension in each of the wire ribs before unleashing it, sending the Jollbot up in the air.  The robot is lightweight so the fall from the height won’t damage it.

There is a bonus element to this robot story in that the Jollbot was made by Rapid Prototyping, process that “prints” out the plastic components.  Just one more step in the process of robots being able to make robots.

Robot Invasion of Mars

leave a comment »

I-SWARM, a robotic project that allows thousands of tiny (cenimeters long) scampering robots to communicate and coordinate like a colony of ants may be sent to Mars.  A swarm of robots provides a lot of backup so the failure of one unit does not mean the entire mission fails.

The researchers are now working on developing swarms of robots that can reconfigure themselves and assemble autonomously into larger robots as part of the EU-funded projects Symbrion and Replicator, with financing totalling EUR 5.3 million and EUR 5.41 million, respectively.

Symbrion and Replicator sound quite ominous.  Cool? Scary? Cool?  Scary-cool?
