Snakebots on a Pole

leave a comment »

Innovative locomotion has been a hallmark of robot design.  In addition to walking, rolling, and hopping, there is now snakelike compression and climbing which allows the snakebot to climb poles.  The design will allow the robots to work in very dangerous locations, at least dangerous for humans.

The specific application that keeps being mentioned is in construction work on tall buildings.   Pretty soon, not even stairs will be an obstacle to a robot that wants to kill us.

Save the Dirty Jobs for the Robots

Household chores take away from the time I can spend with my family.  Every dish I have to do, every piece of clothing that needs to be laundered, every minute I spend sweeping is all time stolen from me.

There are more and more options for robots in the home.

Robot Invasion of Mars

leave a comment »

I-SWARM, a robotic project that allows thousands of tiny (cenimeters long) scampering robots to communicate and coordinate like a colony of ants may be sent to Mars.  A swarm of robots provides a lot of backup so the failure of one unit does not mean the entire mission fails.

The researchers are now working on developing swarms of robots that can reconfigure themselves and assemble autonomously into larger robots as part of the EU-funded projects Symbrion and Replicator, with financing totalling EUR 5.3 million and EUR 5.41 million, respectively.

Symbrion and Replicator sound quite ominous.  Cool? Scary? Cool?  Scary-cool?

The Year is 2025 and Robots Rule… the Service Sector

A U.S. agency, the National Intelligence Council, issued a report which concludes that by the year 2025, robots will be advanced enough to take over service industry jobs.  The low skilled job market will suffer a massive disruption once robots take over slinging burgers and emptying bedpans.
